Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Multiplication can be represented as repeated addition
  2. Multiplication can be represented as scaling
  3. Use the language of unitising '__ groups of __ is equal to __'

Keywords

  • Repeated addition - Repeated addition is the process of adding the same equal group to itself multiple times.

  • Unit fraction - A unit fraction is a fraction where the numerator is 1

  • Represent - To represent something is to show it in a different way.

Common misconception

Pupils consider the whole number to represent an area as well as the fraction.

Take time to discuss what each of the numbers in the expressions represent and link this to the context it is set in.

It is important that pupils continue to link calculations involving the multiplication of fractions and whole numbers with contexts beyond area. For example, pupils should make connections to both linear and cardinal examples. You may also like to link it to a fraction of a volume too.
