Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Partition one of the factors.
  2. Calculate the partial products.
  3. Add the partial products to recombine.

Keywords

  • Partial product - Any of the multiplication results we get leading up to an overall multiplication result is a partial product.

Common misconception

Pupils forget to include regrouped values when multiplying.

Decide on a place and structure for regrouped values - they are included at the top of the algorithm in these lessons to avoid confusion with addition regrouping when partial products are summed. Ensure this is clearly modelled.

Continue to emphasise place value language when describing the long multiplication algorithm and have high expectations that pupils will do the same. This will promote understanding and provide a sense of magnitude when checking the product is sensible.
