Common misconception
Pupils may refer to adding numbers in the tens as 3 + 6 rather than 3 tens + 6 tens or 30 + 60
Encourage pupils to refer to the tens numbers as tens. In 34 + 44, we add 4 ones and 4 ones together, and then we add 3 tens and 4 tens together. This will support pupil's understanding as they progress to addition with regrouping.
