Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. When using column addition, start by adding the numbers with the smallest place value first.
  2. If the sum of the ones or tens digits is ten or greater, regrouping is needed.
  3. Any complete tens are regrouped into the tens column.
  4. Any complete hundreds are regrouped into the hundreds column.

Keywords

  • Column addition - Column addition is a way of adding numbers by writing a number below another.

  • Regroup - The process of unitising and exchanging between place values is known as regrouping.

Common misconception

Pupils may make errors with regrouping in the ones and tens, particularly where there is regrouping in both.

Model examples of regrouping with the pupils, including questions where regrouping in the ones causes regrouping in the tens. If necessary, use Base 10 blocks to help with the modelling.

Pupils need to have some experience of regrouping 10 ones as 1 ten and 10 tens as 1 hundred before starting this session. Digit cards 1-9 would be really helpful for the second part of the session as pupils can use these to attempt to make the different sums.
