Review using column subtraction with regrouping from tens to ones

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use column subtraction with regrouping from the tens to ones.

      Key learning points

      1. Regroup when the ones digit of the subtrahend is greater than the ones digit of the minuend.
      2. Regroup a ten into 10 ones.
      3. Change the number of ones and tens in the minuend.

      Keywords

      • Column subtraction - Column subtraction is a way of subtracting numbers by writing a number below another.

      • Regrouping - The process of unitising and exchanging between place values is known as regrouping.

      Common misconception

Pupils may not understand how regrouping works with column subtraction.

Emphasise with pupils the size of the digits, referring to the tens and the ones. Model using Base 10 blocks so that pupils understand how regrouping works with column subtraction.

      Teacher tip

Pupils need to be familiar with column subtraction where no regrouping is needed before they start this learning. Pupils may need more support with understanding the concept of regrouping. Encourage them to use Base 10 blocks, including with 3-digit numbers, to help them grasp this.
