      Common misconception

      Pupils lack fluency in pairs for 10 and so struggle to connect this to 2-digit numbers.

      Promote fluency through games and chants and consider providing a scaffold of pairs for 10 which will help pupils develop automaticity

      Teacher tip

      Base 10 blocks or bead strings are a great tool here and should be used by learners so they are able to compose and decompose 100 into groups of and multiples of 10
