Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Finding ten times as many is the same as multiplying by 10
  2. 10 is ten times the size of 1
  3. A digit in the tens column is 10 times the value of a digit in the ones column.

Keywords

  • Scaling - Scaling is when a given quantity is made ___ times the size.

  • Multiple - A multiple is the product of a number and an integer.

Common misconception

10 times the size and 10 times as many are achieved through the same operation but they are different.

Use sticky-tack or plasticine. Create 10 blobs that are equal in length to 1 blob that has been stretched. Encourage the children to see that the value of their length is the same but one is made of countable objects whereas the other is stretched.

Gattegno charts are a useful resource to have available throughout this lesson.
