Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. The median is a measure of central tendency.
  2. The median is the middle (or average middle) value in an ordered data set.
  3. The median can be seen as the halfway point of a set of values.

Keywords

  • Median - the central (middle) piece of data when the data is in numerical order. A measure of central tendency representing the average of the values

Common misconception

Pupils may confuse the position of the median with the median's actual value.

Choose data where the position number would not be a reasonable median value and ensure pupils sense check their answers every time.

Have the pupils line up in height order, then sit them down one by one, until the median is located. Part way through you could ask who is the middle? What position are they in the line? This can help with the misconception as well.
