Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Imperial measures come from an older system of measuring.
  2. Imperial measures evolved over the course of history.
  3. Imperial measures use different bases to the metric system.

Keywords

  • Imperial - Imperial is a system of units for measuring, which was created in the early 1800s during the British Empire.

Common misconception

Pupils may get mixed up between metric and imperial units.

You may wish to refer to Lesson 6 of this unit, which explains the metric system’s use of prefixes, and compare this with imperial measures.

You could ask pupils to find other examples of where imperial units are used or find imperial units not covered in the lesson. Task A includes ‘hands’, which are used to measure horses. Pupils can do Task A without knowing this, based on the words.
