Dynamics
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can apply different dynamics (speeds) to a range of actions.
Key learning points
- Move: using different speeds changes the appearance and quality of an action.
- Move: moving slowly or quickly requires control, balance and coordination.
- Think: imagination enables us to apply speed to communicate different moods or ideas.
- Feel: self-belief builds confidence to apply different speeds to our actions.
- Connect: fairness requires us to be aware of others, particularly when moving quickly.
Keywords
Fast - when someone or something moves quickly
Slow - the lack of speed
Speed - how fast or slow we perform an action
Common misconception
There are only two speeds, slow and fast.
There are a wide range of speeds. We might think we can run fast, but a horse can run faster than us, a train can travel faster than a horse and an aeroplane can travel faster than a train.
Teacher tip
Starting with slow speeds establishes control and accuracy and supports safe practice. This is further enhanced by remaining on the spot whilst moving quickly.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom.
