Wide movements
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can create movements and balances in a variety of ways that are wide on the floor and apparatus.
Key learning points
- Move: moving and balancing in wide ways means reaching out with your arms and stretching your legs out wide.
- Move: combining wide with over and under will increase the variety of movements and balances created.
- Think: imagination enables us to perform in different wide ways, combining over and under using different body parts.
- Connect: sharing ideas and supporting others in their learning shows empathy.
- Feel: being brave to try a variety of ideas on apparatus shows self belief and a commitment to trying hard.
Keywords
Wide - actions we perform when our arms and legs are outstretched
Over - to cross over the top of a location
Under - to travel below or underneath a location
Common misconception
Pupils show balances instead of movements on the apparatus. Pupils perform gymnastics actions in silence to be well-behaved. Pointed toes mean lifting toes towards the knees.
Encourage pupils to travel or change their movements, not just hold still. Pupils perform gymnastics actions in silence to show good control. Pointed toes mean pushing the toes away from the legs, making their legs look longer.
Teacher tip
Apparatus list is for guidance only. You can use the equipment you have available. Ladders and monkey bars would be beneficial to incorporate hanging balances. Display KLP's, keywords and important words. When listening to the teacher, pupils stand up straight, 'Stand like a gymnast.'
Equipment
mats, benches, gymnastic tables, climbing frames or wall bars, tambourine

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom.
