Key learning points
- Move: jumping requires bent knees when we take off and land, and swinging our arms up and down again when landing.
- Move: rolling requires us to completely rotate the body and roll over forward, sideways or backwards with good control.
- Think: Imagination enables us to try different ways of linking jumps, rolls and balances with flow.
- Feel: trying out new ideas and encouraging others to perform new moves demonstrates courage.
- Connect: giving thoughtful feedback to help others demonstrates empathy.
Keywords
Rolling - completing a rotation of the body
Jumping - using your legs to push yourself up off the ground and into the air for a moment
Sequence - a combination of 2 or more actions that have been added (linked) together in a particular order.
Common misconception
Pupils use the top of their heads in a forward roll and forget to make their back curved. Pupils bend their backs too much when landing a jump, causing their hands to touch the floor.
Pupils should tuck their heads in, put their chin on their chests and use the back of their head by keeping their back rounded in a forward roll. Remind pupils to keep their backs straight so they can land upright ('land and stand').

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom.
