      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can jump in a variety of ways and understand how to jump using the correct technique.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: jumping requires swinging arms, bending the knees and looking forwards.
      2. Think: curiosity enables us to try a variety of jumping techniques to figure out the most effective one to use.
      3. Feel: self belief enables the exploration of different jumping techniques.
      4. Connect: congratulating others shows empathy and will improve their jumping performance.

      Keywords

      • Jump - using your legs to push yourself up off the ground and into the air for a moment

      • Take off - the first phase of a jump where the athlete is preparing to leave the ground

      • Landing - coming back into contact with the ground after being in the air

      Common misconception

Pupils don't land in a controlled way. Pupils don't focus forwards or use their arms when they jump.

Demonstrate an effective jump with a controlled landing. Explain and demonstrate jumping by swinging the arms up then down and while focusing forwards.

      Teacher tip

Use cones to mark out distances that pupils can aim for when jumping instead of using beanbags to mark their jumping distances.

      Equipment

      15+ floor markers, 30+ cones, 30+ beanbags
