Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: we must swing our arms back for takeoff and forward during the different stages for power and balance.
  2. Move: to perform a standing triple jump we must hop, step, jump in sequence and link the actions together smoothly.
  3. Think: selecting the correct foot to start with ensures we are balanced and in control when standing triple jumping.
  4. Feel: standing triple jump requires patience and resilience to successfully link a hop, step and jump smoothly.
  5. Connect: striving to support one another and evaluate each other's performance is important to improve performance.

Keywords

  • Triple jump - a track and field event where an athlete performs a sequence of three jumps to cover as much distance as possible

  • Link - something that connects two or more things together

  • Smoothly - performing an activity without any sudden stops or jerks

Common misconception

Pupils often think the triple jump consists of a step, step and jump, rather than a hop, step and jump.

Allow pupils time to practise hopping and stepping and highlight the difference between the two. Pupils must understand that a hop requires them to land on the same foot they took off on, and a step is from one foot to the other.
