Team athletics competition
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can help to organise my team as well as take part in running, jumping and throwing events.
Key learning points
- Move: to consistently improve in a competition, we must perform with the correct technique for running and field events.
- Think: in a team competition we select individuals to perform in certain events depending on their strengths.
- Think: we create tactics as a team and apply these to our athletic events to score points and win the competition.
- Feel: performing as part of a team helps to build a sense of trust and belonging.
- Connect: we help our team stay motivated by communicating, ensuring everyone is involved and enjoying the competition.
Keywords
Team - a group of people who work together to achieve the same goal
Performance - how well we are able to execute a skill such as running, throwing or jumping
Events - competitive activities, for example in athletics, we test physical abilities such as speed, strength, endurance and agility.
Common misconception
Pupils believe that only the selected pupil performing in the event needs to focus on it.
Ensure that pupils understand that the whole team has a part to play in each event. Helping with tactics, motivating and encouraging each other are ways they can all be involved.
Teacher tip
Ensure that everyone in the class has performed in a minimum of 1 and a maxiumum of 3 events in this lesson. When creating the teams, where possible, use mixed gender and mixed ability/experience teams. Carry out the competition in event order. Pupils not competing should support their teammates.
Equipment
30+ cones, 5 x javelins, 5 x shots, additional material: throwing safety, worksheet: competition scorecard, worksheet: teamsheet
