Dynamics: force and speed
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can vary the dynamics of my actions to communicate meaning.
Key learning points
- Move: varying the dynamics of actions and combining them when performing requires control.
- Think: selecting words and using them to devise a simple story demonstrates decision making.
- Feel: responsibility is needed when using strong and fast dynamics in a group.
- Connect: successfully applying a range of dynamics and choreographing a sequence requires collaboration.
Keywords
Dynamics - the speed or force of an action
Speed - the rate or pace of an action
Force - the degree of effort in an action
Common misconception
Dynamics involve either speed or force, not both.
Dynamics are a combination of both speed and force. We naturally use them both in every action we do, in dance we can use them to clearly communicate our dance idea, sometimes this requires greater emphasis on one or the other.
Teacher tip
Using whiteboards to note down the four words in the order of their storyline can support some learners.
Equipment
additional materials: suggested music and grid of dynamic words

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
