Space: levels
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can use different levels effectively in my choreography.
Key learning points
- Move: holding a shape still requires accuracy and control.
- Move: moving between shapes and actions, at different levels, requires control of the space used and dynamic applied.
- Think: using contrasting levels within a group requires problem solving skills.
- Feel: moving around other people closely involves being thoughtful and responsible.
- Connect: watching the work of others and offering useful feedback is a form of collaboration.
Keywords
Levels - the height at which a shape or action is performed
Complementary - harmonious, where shapes or actions are different but blend together
Choreography - the way a dance is planned out
Common misconception
To demonstrate changing levels, you have to stay on the spot.
Whilst you may wish to remain on the spot, changing levels can be incorporated into other actions such as travelling or with other spacial elements such as pathways or directions.
Teacher tip
Emphasising the effect of 'status' through using levels may guide the pupils to create a character or narrative based piece, this can be complemented by looking at professional works such as the opening section of 'Swan Song' by Christopher Bruce.
