Sequences to include counter balance and counter tension on apparatus
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can create a sequence on apparatus that starts with a counter balance and ends with a counter tension balance using movements with flow to link the balances together.
Key learning points
- Move: quality movements require moving consistently with extension, control and flow throughout the sequence.
- Think: linking the balances with movements in canon or unison, changes in level and direction requires careful planning.
- Think: designing the sequence involves careful composition to ensure it's high quality.
- Connect: ensuring the sequence is performed with flow from start to finish requires strong trust and respect.
- Feel: ensuring there is always maximum effort to perform to our very best requires integrity.
Keywords
Consistently - performing movements the same way every time
Link - moving from one action to another without stopping
Sequence - combination of controlled movements and balances that have been linked together in a particular order
Common misconception
Now that counter tension balances and counter balances are used in the same lesson, pupils may mix them up.
Emphasise the difference between the two balances and that counter balances usually involve a pushing action and counter tension balances involve a pulling action.
Teacher tip
Always emphasise the importance of being still and silent when performing balances. Reducing the duration/elements within the sequence can be a way of helping those pupils who are struggling. They should focus more on developing the quality of their counter tension balances and counter balances.
