Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: sequences show a change in level between movements and balances from high to low, without stopping, on apparatus.
  2. Think: reflecting on how to link a sequence on apparatus will improve the fluidity and quality of the performance.
  3. Think: deciding on the different apparatus we are going to use to create our sequence requires reflection.
  4. Feel: striving to develop a range of high quality movements that include a change in level demonstrates responsibility.
  5. Connect: supporting our partners in balances and ensuring collaboration to include both our ideas requires trust.

Keywords

  • Level - the height at which an action is performed in relation to the ground or surface

  • Apparatus - equipment made for a particular task

  • Sequence - combination of controlled movements and balances that have been linked together in a particular order

Common misconception

Some pupils may suggest jumping to mount and dismount apparatus as a change in level during their sequence.

This lesson guide focuses on a change in level in relation to the surface of the apparatus i.e closer or further away. For example, from stomach, push into a plank. Jumping off changes levels in relation to the ground which is not the intended focus.

Jumping to dismount the apparatus during sequences should be discouraged as this changes a pupil's level in relation to the ground and not the surface of the apparatus. This maximises pupil acivity time by removing the need to spend time, in this lesson, on safety instructions for jumping dismounts.
