Controlling the body: jumps and landings

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can perform take-offs and landings accurately and perform a variety of jumps with good technique.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: parkour landings require good technique to work effectively, both building and requiring lower body strength.
      2. Move: running precisions, strides and plyos require core strength and coordination.
      3. Think: landing technique is important as it is your primary tool to keep oneself safe in parkour.
      4. Feel: developing new techniques helps you learn the capabilities of your body, be calm and relaxed during all phases.
      5. Connect: encouraging others when they commit to a jump, builds a strong community where everyone can prosper.

      Keywords

      • Jumps - dynamic movements aiming to cover distance or overcome obstacles, focusing on control, precision and safety

      • Quadrupedal - using all four limbs to move or support the body

      • Plyos - quick, explosive jumps from two feet involving fast transitions from landing to take-off

      Common misconception

Pupils often take-off flat footed or leaning backwards and look down during their jumps.

Pupils should take-off from the balls of the feet with knees and hips engaged, swinging their arms for more momentum. Pupils should ensure they keep their eyes locked on the landing spot from take-off to landing.

      Teacher tip

The sooner learners have some form of edge to land on, the better. Precision landing technique on the floor doesn’t have the same feel and can be uncomfortable at moderate to large distances.

      Equipment

4 benches, 4 gymnastics tables, mats, floor markings/hoops
