Create and apply tactics, introduce umpiring and scoring
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can apply tactics when fielding to prevent the batter from scoring runs and can take on the role of an umpire.
Key learning points
- Move: increasing and decreasing our bowling speed and power makes it difficult for the batter.
- Move: it is important to always run to meet the ball when fielding and work with our teammates to outwit the batter.
- Think: creating and applying different tactics and working together as fielders can reduce the number of runs scored.
- Feel: taking on the role of umpire shows responsibility and an appreciation of the rules.
- Connect: encouraging others and making sure everyone is happy and motivated to try their best demonstrates leadership.
Keywords
Tactics - a carefully planned set of actions that are used by a team or an individual to achieve a certain goal
Outwit - using tactics and strategies to gain an advantage over our opponents
Umpire - an official who makes decisions to ensure that the game is played fairly and by the rules
Common misconception
When bowling, pupils focus solely on bowling powerfully and quickly every bowl, often causing them to bowl inaccurately or without proper technique.
Ensure pupils understand that the accuracy of their bowling is crucial and that varying the speed and power of the bowls can actually make it trickier for the batter to hit the ball.
Teacher tip
Use pupils who have picked up the bowling technique quickly in previous sessions to model technique and support their peers. Allowing an opportunity for scaffolding to occur will help pupils struggling with the technique.
Equipment
1 bat between 4 pupils, 1 tennis ball between 4 pupils, 8x cricket stumps, battings tees, clipboard and paper for scoring.
