      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can create and apply tactics when batting to help my team score more runs in a game.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: we can adjust shots by moving our body position and angle of the bat to strike the ball in different directions.
      2. Move: striking the ball so that we aim low and hard reduces the chances of fielders catching us out.
      3. Think: evaluating the opposition helps us to identify strengths and weaknesses so we can adapt our tactics in the game.
      4. Feel: striving to always try our best and win the game shows we are leading and taking responsibility for our team.
      5. Connect: in a game situation, we should always strive to encourage others, so our team is motivated within the game.

      Keywords

      • Tactics - a carefully planned set of actions that are used by a team or an individual to achieve a certain goal

      • Strike - the act of hitting/making contact with the ball

      • Runs - the unit of scoring in cricket and determines who wins the game

      Common misconception

As a batting pair, pupils are often poor at communicating when to run, causing confusion and resulting in them being run out.

Teach pupils the importance of communication between the batters and ensure they understand the consequence of being run out.

      Teacher tip

Try to differentiate the teams where possible to encourage competitive games and teamwork. If odd numbers, allow some teams to have an extra fielder.

      Equipment

8x stumps, 8x bats, 10x tennis balls, additional materials: batting scenarios, 30+ cones.
