Fielding tactics
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can apply different fielding tactics to prevent the batting team from scoring rounders in a game.
Key learning points
- Move: using a long or short barrier technique will help to accurately stop a moving ball.
- Move: retrieving and then returning the ball quickly to fielders on the bases helps to prevent batters from scoring.
- Think: making quick decisions when fielding about where to throw the ball will prevent the batting team from scoring.
- Feel: setting high standards and always trying our best as part of a team demonstrates excellent motivation.
- Connect: when applying tactics in a game, we must communicate with our teammates to help them make good decisions.
Keywords
Bases - 4 points on the rounders field positioned in a diamond shape which a player has to run round to score a rounder
Fielding - when players on the team that is not batting try to catch or stop the ball and get the batters out
Quickly - reacting swiftly and effectively in a game situation
Common misconception
When pupils use the long barrier fielding technique, they do not join their heel with their knee therefore leaving a gap for the ball to roll through.
Ensure pupils understand the concept of creating a barrier and that they need to ensure they leave no gaps for the ball to roll through if they miss it with their hands.
Teacher tip
Pupils who struggle with their hand-eye coordination will benefit from practising the short and long barrier using a slightly larger ball. Ensure fielders stand on the inside of the bases, allowing batters to run on the outside.
Equipment
30+ cones, 20+ tennis balls, rounders balls, larger balls, rounders bases.
