Game play: batting and fielding
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can apply a range of tactics when faced with different scenarios in a rounders game.
Key learning points
- Move: using consistently accurate throwing, catching and retrieving skills in a game leads to success.
- Move: striking the ball away from fielders and into space allows us more time to run.
- Think: evaluating our team helps identify strengths and weaknesses to adapt our tactics in a game.
- Feel: always striving to play fairly and follow the rules of the game shows integrity.
- Connect: in game situations we must communicate effectively so our team understands the tactics we are applying.
Keywords
Tactics - a carefully planned set of actions that are used by a team or an individual to achieve a certain goal
Bases - 1st to 4th marked out on the pitch by posts that a batter has to run around to score for their team
Game - an activity or sport in which people compete with each other according to agreed rules
Common misconception
When pupils are running around the bases and they have stopped on a base, they often lose concentration or do not understand when they need to run again, which can result in a run out.
Ensure pupils understand that even though they have stopped, they still need to focus in order to make it round the bases without getting out. The batter can continue running again once the bowler has bowled the ball.
Teacher tip
It can be hard to oversee 2 safe games of rounders at once, therefore you should utilise skills of the pupils. Each team should nominate a pupil to keep score whilst their team are batting, whilst 1/2 pupils on the fielding team should act as umpires.
Equipment
4x rounders balls, larger balls/ tennis balls, 8x rounders bases, 30+ cones, rounders bats, additional materials (rules).
