      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can apply basic tactics when fielding to prevent the batter from scoring rounders in a game.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: effective fielding requires using the correct catching and throwing techniques to stop the batter from scoring.
      2. Move: being in a ready position, tracking the ball and sprinting towards it helps stop the batter.
      3. Think: fielders should work together and apply tactics such as backing each other up to stop the batting team scoring.
      4. Feel: striving to always try hard, even when we are struggling, demonstrates resilience.
      5. Connect: collaborating well as a team, using good communication will help make sure that everyone is involved.

      Keywords

      • Fielding - when players in the team who are not batting, try to catch or stop the ball to get the batters out.

      • Technique - the way in which a skill is performed

      • Tactics - a carefully planned set of actions that are used by a team or an individual to achieve a certain goal

      Common misconception

Pupils believe that when fielding, they only need to think about how they use their hands when attempting to catch or stop a moving ball, which can cause them to miss the ball.

Ensure pupils understand the importance of moving their feet quickly to ensure they are able to position their body behind the ball. This will increase their chances of stopping the ball from going any further.

      Teacher tip

Highlight the importance of fielding and how effective fielding can help to win a game, as well as effective batting. Ensure to celebrate and praise pupils making good decisions when fielding.
