      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can understand how and where to hit the ball in a game of racing rounders.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: when batting, stand sideways on, watch the ball closely and follow through in the direction of the target.
      2. Move: batting the ball with intent into spaces away from the fielders will help us to score more rounders in a game.
      3. Think: good decision making is important when batting to try and outwit the fielders, and score more rounders in a game.
      4. Feel: practising our batting technique and trying to improve shows we are self-motivated.
      5. Connect: supporting our teammates in making good decisions shows responsibility and builds trust.

      Keywords

      • Batting - using a bat to try to hit a ball that is thrown or bowled

      • Intent - striking a ball with a specific objective or strategy in mind

      • Game - an activity or sport in which people compete with each other according to agreed rules

      Common misconception

Pupils try to generate their hitting power using just their arm, which results in them over swinging and missing the ball.

Remind pupils that swining smoothly and keeping their eye on the ball is important. Pupils should bend their knees slightly and use their hips to rotate and generate power.

      Teacher tip

Hitting a tennis ball with a rounders bat requires secure hand-eye coordination and can be tricky for some pupils, so don't hesitate to adapt the equipment if needed. A tennis racket has a larger surface area and is easier to apply a more natural swing motion.

      Equipment

30+ tennis balls, rounders bats/ tennis rackets, 30+ cones, rounders bases, batting tees
