The concept of racing rounders
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can apply my knowledge of batting and fielding when playing racing rounders.
Key learning points
- Move: accurate throwing using both underarm and overarm techniques allows us to throw the ball into space.
- Move: after throwing the ball we must run quickly around the bases to score a rounder.
- Think: knowing that the job of the fielders is to prevent the batting team scoring rounders helps us create tactics.
- Feel: trying our hardest, even when we make mistakes, shows we have resilience.
- Connect: collaborating and helping our teammates to make in-game decisions develops trust.
Keywords
Rounder - hit/throw the ball and successfully run around all four bases faster than the fielding team can retrieve the ball
Bases - 4 points on the rounders field, positioned in a diamond shape, which a player has to run round to score a rounder.
Throw - using your hand to send a ball through the air to a specific target or area.
Common misconception
When fielding, pupils retrieve the ball and run with it in order to return it to the pupil on a base.
Tell the pupils that when fielding, they should work together as a team. Instead of running with the ball, they should quickly pass it to another player support, who needs to be close by and supporting. This will help move the ball faster.
Teacher tip
Depending on numbers, you may have 1 team not playing during cycle 2. Either adjust the size of the teams so all pupils are playing, or create space for the team not playing to practise their throwing and catching.
Equipment
1 hoop per pupil, 1 beanbag per pupil, 1 tennis ball per game, floor markers, 30+ cones, 8x rounders bases.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom.
