Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: gliding forwards requires extended arms, hands on top of each other and being long and narrow like an arrow.
  2. Think: being in a streamlined position aids effective propulsion.
  3. Feel: experimenting with different body positions for gliding requires self-belief.
  4. Connect: working with peers to identify effective body positions when gliding requires patience.

Keywords

  • Streamlined - little resistance to movement through the water, increasing speed and ease of movement

  • Float - to stay on the surface of water without sinking

  • Glide - move with a smooth continuous motion

Common misconception

Pupils keep their head away from the water.

Pupils should be made aware that if the face is in the water it is much easier for the legs to float.

Allow pupils repeated opportunity to pratice the glide. Use all available pool walls to allow pupils opportunity to repeat the skill without having to wait for their turn.
