Push and glides, streamlining
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can perform a push and glide on my front and back in a long streamlined stretched body position.
Key learning points
- Move: gliding forwards requires extended arms, hands on top of each other and being long and narrow like an arrow.
- Think: being in a streamlined position aids effective propulsion.
- Feel: experimenting with different body positions for gliding requires self-belief.
- Connect: working with peers to identify effective body positions when gliding requires patience.
Keywords
Streamlined - little resistance to movement through the water, increasing speed and ease of movement
Float - to stay on the surface of water without sinking
Glide - move with a smooth continuous motion
Common misconception
Pupils keep their head away from the water.
Pupils should be made aware that if the face is in the water it is much easier for the legs to float.
Teacher tip
Allow pupils repeated opportunity to pratice the glide. Use all available pool walls to allow pupils opportunity to repeat the skill without having to wait for their turn.
Equipment
water safety code poster, a noodle per pupil, two floats per pupil, large weighted hoops (alternative is to use a noodle) - one hoop per four pupils

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom.
