      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use good jumping mechanics to maximise how far I can jump.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: good jumping mechanics include landing with feet parallel to ensure the jump distance is maximised.
      2. Move: performing an effective long jump requires a one foot take-off followed by stretching ‘for the trapeze’.
      3. Think: ensuring you perform the 3 phases of the long jump correctly will ensure you perform a legal jump.
      4. Feel: being determined to perform at your best will help to achieve personal best results.
      5. Connect: helping others by giving them instant performance feedback will enable them to understand how to improve.

      Keywords

      • Landing - the moment the jumper touches the ground after completing the jump

      • Parallel - side by side alignment of the feet on landing

      • Take-off - the moment when the jumper pushes off the ground to begin their jump

      Common misconception

When perfroming the long jump, many pupils take a long step into the pit which means they land with one foot in front of the other which reduces the distance they achieve.

Pupils should be taught to land with feet parallel by bringing the take-off foot through and in front of them so that no distance is lost and they achieve a maximal score.

      Teacher tip

As most long jump pits only allow for one pupil to jump at a time, the first activities should take place in an open space nearby so all can be practising and to increase activity time for each pupil.
