Realising your potential at long jump

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can coach someone to approach the long jump effectively and achieve a greater distance.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: an approach which is an appropriate length and at near-maximal speed, provides the best preparation to jump far.
      2. Move: hitting the board with the take off foot at the ideal point will maximise jump distance.
      3. Think: observing a performance and prioritising what to feedback about can help someone else to make improvements.
      4. Feel: seeing someone using your feedback to help them to perform better can be satisfying.
      5. Connect: coaching a partner to improve through observation and feedback can help them to make more progress.

      Keywords

      • Approach - the phase in which an athlete runs toward the take off board

      • Feedback - information/guidance provided to a performer to help them improve or motivate them

      • Take off - the moment when the athlete leaves the ground

      Common misconception

Pupils are often quick to focus their feedback on something which went wrong or needs improvement, without considering the impact of identifying what is also being performed well.

Pupils can use methods such as the 'feedback sandwich' which encourages them to think about identifying positive aspects of performance as well as areas for improvement.

      Teacher tip

As the first part of the lesson is an investigation, it would be preferable to have pupils perform the activities before sharing the explanation to encourage them to discover the impact of an approach for themselves.
