Modifying and teaching routines to others
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can modify a routine and teach it to others.
Key learning points
- Move: when performing, pupils show control, extension, accurate timing and flow to perform a high quality routine.
- Think: good communication improves teamwork enabling a higher chance of a successful outcome.
- Feel: good communication when leading a group helps to build self confidence.
- Connect: good leadership facilitates teamwork and encourages input from everyone, making each person feel included.
- Connect: taking turns to be the leader shows fairness and ensures everyone respects each other.
Keywords
Routine - a series of choreographed movements and skills performed and meeting certain requirements
Leader - someone who influences others to achieve their goals
Feedback - giving helpful suggestions on how someone can improve their performance
Common misconception
Performing group routines often means some members of the group may struggle with the choreography and therefore feel self-conscious and demotivated.
Stress to each group the importance of adapting choreography to suit the needs of everyone in the group. For example, some pupils could perform backward rolls whilst others perform a more basic roll. Or everyone may change the skill they perform.
Teacher tip
You may want to carefully consider the groupings throughout these lessons and make changes even at this stage if it is necessary. Differentiation by confidence and competence in leading is more important here than differentiation of physical abilities.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
