Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: positioning your body side on to the attacker helps you make a legal tackle without losing balance.
  2. Move: use an open hand to knock the ball out of your opponent’s hands when tackling.
  3. Think: anticipating where your opponent may move to helps you get into position early and make an effective tackle.
  4. Feel: timing the tackle is challenging and takes determination to keep trying, even if you miss the first attempt.
  5. Connect: showing respect and kindness to others is harder when under pressure.

Keywords

  • Gaelic football - a team sport where players try to score by kicking or punching a ball into a goal or over a crossbar.

  • Tackle - when you try to win the ball by flicking or knocking it away when it’s not close to the opponent’s body

  • Determination - the ability to keep trying and not give up, even when things are hard

Common misconception

Pupils think if they miss a tackle, they should just give up.

Pupils need to show determination to chase back and continue to pressure the attack, even if they miss a tackle.
