Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: roll offs and side steps require fast feet and agility to evade an opponent.
  2. Think: roll offs and side steps are movements used to evade an opponent.
  3. Think: faking a solo or a pass misleads the defender and creates space to shoot or move in a different direction.
  4. Feel: as time exposed to playing a new game increases, so too does confidence and ability to play to the rules.
  5. Connect: empathy and support is shown when some individuals pick up the rules and skills faster than others.

Keywords

  • Side stepping - a feinting movement used to evade a defender by quickly shifting weight to one side before exploding in the opposite direction

  • Roll off - a turning movement where a player uses their body to spin away from a defender to maintain possession of the ball

  • Fake - using subtle movements such as a shoulder dip or shift in weight to send the defender the wrong way

Common misconception

The fake is too subtle and not performed at a fast enough pace. Pupils make fake too early so it is easy to read.

Use clear and exaggerated movements when faking and shift your weight explosively. Wait until the defender is close before performing your faked movement.

Ensure pupils have time to work on all of the skills in isolation, then add a passive defender, before moving to an active defender. Eventually apply all the skills in a game situation. If the skills are not performed well in a game, go back a step and look at the skills in isolation again.
