Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: a punt kick involves striking the ball with the instep to ensure accuracy.
  2. Move: tracking the ball early and cushioning the ball ensures it can be passed quickly after catching.
  3. Think: accurate kicking allows you to move the ball, create scoring opportunities and switch play quickly.
  4. Feel: utilising a variety of foot and hand eye coordination requires confidence in those skills.
  5. Connect: supporting and encouraging your teammates when they make mistakes is important when playing competitive games.

Keywords

  • Punt kick - the most common foot passing technique by dropping the ball onto the foot to kick before it hits the ground

  • Possession - a player or team has control of the ball, allowing them to pass, solo, hand pass or shoot

  • Tracking - watch, follow and anticipate the movement of the ball as it travels through the air

Common misconception

Kicks may lack the necessary power or accuracy, or they might often miss their target. High catches can be intimidating and pupils may mistime their jump.

Focus on good technique before increasing distance or adding movements to kicks. When performing a high catch, track the ball early and use the jumping technique to meet the ball when it is at its highest point.
