Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: power is generated by taking steps into a jump shot.
  2. Move: follow through with your throwing arm towards the target improves accuracy to guide the ball's path after release.
  3. Think: only the goalkeeper can enter the 6 metre area. Attackers are not allowed to stand in this area while shooting.
  4. Feel: enduring the complexity of shooting on the move requires resilience.
  5. Connect: working together in defence reduces the potential of open shots on goal.

Keywords

  • Standing shot - a shooting technique whilst stationary

  • Bounced shot - shooting on goal with the ball hitting the floor on its way

  • Jump shot - a shooting technique performed while the players feet are in the air

Common misconception

Pupils think the shooter is allowed in the D to score (like netball).

The only person allowed in the D is the goalkeeper, shooters have to shoot from outside the D, otherwise the goal doesn't count.

If you don't have space or equipment for 6+ handball nets, you could use benches or cones as shooting targets or draw goals on the wall in chalk that can rub off. Also using chalk/masking tape to mark out the 'D' may be easier and safer than placing lots of cones down.
Teacher tip

Equipment

1 handball per pupil, 30 + cone, 6 goals/benches, optional chalk and 6 sets of 5 bibs.
