Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: it is easier to control and manipulate the ball with the sole of the foot.
  2. Move: moving with the ball keeping eyes up to find space and avoid defenders improves fluency of movement.
  3. Think: a futsal is heavier than a football which results in closer control and less ariel play.
  4. Feel: persistence is needed when learning new skills with the ball, to show you have the determination to improve.
  5. Connect: it's important to be mindful of the skill level of the person you are passing to and adjust power accordingly

Keywords

  • Dribble - moving with the ball

  • Futsal - a modified form of football played with a heavier ball with five players per side on a smaller pitch/court

  • Sole - the bottom of the foot that can be used to control and manipulate the ball

Common misconception

Pupils often dribble with their head down, focusing too much on the ball and not on teammates, spaces to move into or defenders within the space.

Encourage pupils to develop the habit of looking up regularly to scan the area.

Some techniques for futsal are different to football. Choose whether to focus on different technical elements or just use futsal as an opportunity to play small sided games with a heavier ball. Lesson 6 contains additional materials outlining the rules of futsal if you want to refer to these.
