Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: pre-loading your legs with a split step speeds up reactions.
  2. Move: lunging requires big steps and an explosive push back to the centre of the court.
  3. Think: running through the shuttle leaves you out of position for the next shot.
  4. Feel: continuing to push hard, even when fatigued or out of breath, shows determination.
  5. Connect: cheering on others helps with their motivation to try hard and perform at their best.

Keywords

  • Split step - a small explosive movement which enables you to change direction quickly

  • Agility - the ability to change direction at speed

  • Coordination - the ability to use two or more body parts at the same time

Common misconception

Pupils wait until their opponent hits the shuttle before starting to initiate movement to retrieve it.

If you wait until you know where the shuttle is going before starting to move, you will often be too late to get to it. Instead, pre-load your legs with a split step to trigger an explosive lunge to reach the shuttle faster.

Both worksheets can be used in the 'moving like a pro' task and also in the 'game play' task to manage large groups or insufficient court space to play full court singles. These will support the development of good full court movement skills and improved analysis whilst waiting to play.
