Key learning points
- Move: changing direction when running requires you to run on the balls of your feet and turn your hips.
- Think: different symbols are used to represent different features on the map.
- Think: maps should be orientated in the same direction as the terrain around you.
- Feel: imagination is required to visualise an area from an aerial view.
- Connect: working as a team requires us to share responsibility and support each other.
Keywords
Warm up - a pulse raiser and stretching/mobility exercise that helps prepare the body for activity and reduces the risk of getting injured
Orienteering - a competitive sport where participants run around a predetermined course using a map and sometimes a compass
Orientate - line up the map to match the key features in front of you to help when following a predetermined route
Common misconception
Confusion transferring the route from the map to real life.
By orientating the map and holding it facing the same way relative to key features/north, you can quickly navigate around and avoid confusion every time you change direction.
