Social skill challenges
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can cooperate with others to be successful in team challenges.
Key learning points
- Move: success in challenges requires working together quickly, handling balloons and equipment with precision and care.
- Move: throwing a ball requires the opposite foot to step forward, following through and pointing at the target.
- Think: considering the unique talents of everyone is an effective strategy to ensure everyone plays to their strengths.
- Feel: working together as a team to achieve challenges gives a sense of belonging.
- Connect: social interaction can include verbal and non verbal communication with your peers.
Keywords
Cooperation - the action of working together to achieve common goals
Timing - the judgement and control of when something should be done
Strategy - the plan of action designed to achieve an overall aim
Common misconception
A team will still be successful as long as some of its members contribute and work hard.
Everyone should be given the opportunity to use their voice and have a role to ensure success. Every pupil needs to be encouraged to share their ideas and listen to others in each learning cycle.
Teacher tip
Ensure all four teams are balanced with the more vocal and reserved characters to give every pupil a chance of contributing. Reward teams for their contributions beyond just the physical form (social and creative skills etc.).
Equipment
1 blown up balloon per 2 pupils, 24 hoops (groups of 6 hoops must be the same size)

The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
