Lesson details
Key learning points
- Move: stepping the front foot forward gets the body into position to hit a drive shot.
- Think: different batting strokes are needed to send the ball away from the fielding team.
- Think: constantly assessing the fielders positions will give you the opportunity to find gaps.
- Feel: hitting the ball between fielders to create scoring opportunities provides a sense of satisfaction.
- Connect: being silent while the batter is about to take their shot shows respect for others and etiquette.
Keywords
Front foot - the batter’s foot which is nearest to the bowler
Drive - a batting stroke played on the front foot
Tee - a device used to hold the ball in place to practice hitting off
Common misconception
Many pupils do not move their feet in response to the pitch of a ball, instead keeping their feet in the same place throughout. This leads to awkward and ineffective swings at the ball.
Using tees slows down the thought process so that footwork can be learned before facing a moving ball. Almost every shot requires some foot movement and the stance should allow for this by being on balls of feet and with knees slightly bent.
