Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: the reverse sweep is performed by rotating the bat and sweeping the bat from in front of leg side to the off side.
  2. Think: selecting the reverse sweep requires quick decisions based on the nature of the bowling.
  3. Think: considering how others must be feeling and experiencing emotions can help to suitably respond and support them.
  4. Feel: successfully playing an advanced shot such as reverse sweep in competitive situations should make you proud.
  5. Connect: supporting others to manage their emotions requires sensitivity and good perceptions.

Keywords

  • Reverse sweep - shot where the batter sweeps the ball across to the off side.

  • Emotional control - staying calm and managing your feelings during pressure, success or setbacks

  • Support (emotional) - helping teammates manage their feelings by encouraging them, showing empathy and reacting calmly when things go wrong

Common misconception

Some pupils don't consider the emotions of other people involved in a game which can lead to unsavoury comments after mistakes or poor play.

Encourage pupils to consider the emotions of others and how they might be able to positively influence the emotions of others through words and actions.

Since emotional support isn't always visible, prompt pupils to reflect on how they felt supported during gameplay. Use pauses and the plenary to highlight examples. This builds empathy, strengthens team cohesion and values contributions beyond physical skill.
