Key learning points
- Move: a high top elbow can help play shots with a straight bat, protect your wicket and limit LBWs.
- Think: making a decision to ‘walk’, when you know you are out, demonstrates honesty and integrity.
- Feel: performing a well-timed shot with a straight bat and high top elbow can be very satisfying.
- Connect: partner feedback can help to visualise performance and quickly fix errors.
Keywords
Integrity - sticking to your principles and values, even under pressure
Honesty - being honest and fair in your actions and doing the right thing
LBW (leg before wicket) - when the ball hits the batter’s body (not their bat) and it would have gone on to hit the stumps
Common misconception
Pupils will swing the bat across their body like a baseball bat which increases the chance of missing the ball, edging it or getting out.
Pupils should understand that because of the way the ball is bowled in cricket, playing with a straight bat is often the most effective way to strike and not risk your wicket.
