      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can be a leader of a team and take responsibility for team decisions.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: when the ball is hit to the boundary, it often requires a second fielder to help relay the ball.
      2. Think: considering the abilities of the chasing fielder will lead to taking up a good position when relaying the ball.
      3. Think: taking on a leadership role requires a commitment to serve others in favour of personal gains.
      4. Feel: happiness comes when your team is performing well, especially when your leadership/contribution aids success.
      5. Connect: social integrity involves acting in ways that are just and fair, and contributing positively to the community.

      Keywords

      • Leadership - the ability of an individual or a group of people to influence and guide others

      • Social integrity - behaving in a way that is fair, respectful, and supportive of others

      • Relay - when one fielder throws the ball to a teammate who is closer to the stumps, so that fielder can quickly throw it in

      Common misconception

Pupils may believe that if they are not the fielder chasing a ball, they are not needed, even though the chasing fielder cannot throw the full distance to the wickets.

Pupils should understand that fielders need to work together and if they think the fielder will struggle to throw the distance, they should support by positioning themselves to relay the ball.

      Teacher tip

Some pupils will require some scaffolding before taking on leadership roles fully. Consider letting them have experiences of being vice captains for advice or prompts, but asking them to deliver the message.
