Respect and sportspersonship
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can demonstrate respect and sportspersonship in different striking and fielding game situations.
Key learning points
- Move: clapping, running over to someone or giving a high 5 after they perform well, reflects physical appreciation.
- Think: applying the rules fairly requires taking an impartial stance, even when you want to win.
- Feel: your own good performance and contribution to your team performance can bring joy.
- Connect: taking it in turns to experience all the playing positions enriches the experience for all.
Keywords
Sportspersonship - the quality of showing fairness, respect toward the opposing team or player when competing.
Respect - showing someone or something regard for their abilities and worth, valuing their feelings and views, even if you don't agree with them
Fairness - following the rules, treating everyone equally and making decisions without bias
Common misconception
Pupils may not always recognise that celebrating others' achievements is an important part of their own development and contribution to the team.
Encourage pupils that part of the game is to show respect and to respecfully physically appreciate it when someone performs well.
Teacher tip
To emphasise the lesson outcome, take a break in the middle of the game to ask pupils to give examples of when they felt respected, demonstrated respect or saw others doing so.
