A cardiovascular base
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can develop my cardiovascular system through endurance activities and continuous training.
Key learning points
- Move: during continuous training, pace is steady with a relaxed and rhythmical arm swing in time with legs.
- Think: continuous training improves cardiovascular endurance and muscular endurance.
- Feel: training can result in being comfortable working at an elevated breathing/heart rate, with mild leg discomfort.
- Connect: congratulating others on their performance, regardless of how fast they were, builds mutual respect.
Keywords
Cardiovascular system - made up of the heart, blood vessels and the blood, transporting oxygen to the body and removes carbon dioxide
Endurance - the ability to sustain exercise for an extended period of time without fatigue
Continuous training - training at a low/moderate steady rate without a break for a longer period of time (at least 20 minutes)
Common misconception
Some pupils approach many fitness tasks as a race/competition and often give up as opposed to slowing down and maintaining movement until the end.
Reassure that a finishing position is irrelevant and instead focus on personal performance and improvement to their own fitness.
Teacher tip
For learning cycle one 'fitness scavenger hunt', where possible, chose locations around the school that are spread over distance to emphasise continuous training and the need to keep moving.
Equipment
Printed additional materials plus pre-prepared own venues & linked exercises, blu tack / tape, cones, benches

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom.
