Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: performing a combination of body/ball feints misleads defenders and creates opportunities for passing or shooting.
  2. Move: a firm, stable screen helps a teammate get free and catch the ball in space for a better shot on goal.
  3. Think: evaluating when to set a screen to block defenders ensures they are used effectively.
  4. Feel: confidence is the result of thorough preparation and practice, knowing you've done everything possible to succeed.
  5. Connect: effective communication enhances team cohesion and performance.

Keywords

  • Feint - a quick, fake movement (with the body or ball) used to trick a defender and create space to pass, move or shoot.

  • Screens - use of body to block space to help a teammate get free

  • Space - an open area on the court where a player can move easily or catch without being marked

Common misconception

Pupils think it is only defenders that screen attackers.

Attackers should also screen defenders to allow other attacking teammates to run into the space.

It is important to stress that screening does not involve contact. A player cannot simply run through another player and if this happens, that player needs to be sanctioned accordingly to ensure the game remains safe.
