Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: when replicating a basic dig or set shot it is key to cushion the ball.
  2. Move: quick feet allow you to get in a low position behind the ball before bending/straightening the knees to add power.
  3. Think: control comes from a cushioned impact whereas power comes from a clean connection with the ball.
  4. Feel: working independently requires self-discipline and focus.
  5. Connect: showing respect for others by not getting in their way while practising and communicating the key techniques.

Keywords

  • Dig - getting low to stop the ball hitting the floor and tap it back up into play

  • Set - an overhead pass to a teammate

  • Spike - an attacking smash shot where a player swings their arm down over the ball

Common misconception

Pupils think that a spike is performed with the hand in a fist shape.

A spike is performed with an open hand with the fingers together and the ball contacting the centre of the palm.
