Survival skills and first aid
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can demonstrate basic first aid skills in a range of scenarios.
Key learning points
- Move: the faster we pump our arms and drive our legs to collect clues, the more time we have to work out what they mean.
- Move: kneeling by a casualty, arms kept straight, allows you to utilise your body weight when completing compressions.
- Think: understanding RICE & DRABC enables correct selection of the appropriate first aid response to keep someone safe.
- Feel: remaining calm and using the acronyms as a guide can help manage potentially stressful situations.
- Connect: working with others to practice supporting someone in need demonstrates empathy, teamwork and respect.
Keywords
CPR - a life-saving emergency procedure called cardiopulmonary resuscitation
DRABC - an acronym danger, response, airway, breathing, circulation
RICE - an acronym for rest, ice, compression, elevation
Common misconception
I am not a qualified first aider so I can't help someone in need.
Basic knowledge can allow you to help with minor injuries. Knowing what to do in certain circumstances means that you can support and hopefully make a difference for any more major situations.
Teacher tip

Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
