Grip, stance and swing basics
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can demonstrate the grip, stance and swing basics using the correct technique.
Key learning points
- Move: gripping requires the lead hand on the handle, the trail hand overlaps to interlock the pinky of the lead hand.
- Move: a fluid and rhythmical backswing, downswing and follow through increases the success of our shots.
- Think: keeping the feet and head still, focused on the ball, helps control the shot.
- Feel: recognising and understanding your emotions in different situations demonstrates self-discipline.
- Connect: clear and constant communication ensures everyone agrees, reduces errors and enhances team cohesion.
Keywords
Vardon/overlap grip - involves both hands anchored through the right pinky finger
Swing - the motion a player makes to hit the ball
Stance - the position of a golfer’s feet, legs and body in relation to the golf ball and target line before starting the swing
Common misconception
To hit the ball in golf, you lift your head up to look at the target.
Explain to pupils that in order to hit the ball successfully you need to keep your head down and focused on the ball.
