Pupils will already know about components of fitness and the long term benefits of training on their body systems from the physical training and anatomy and physiology units. This unit connects the physiological and psychological factors with a focus on everyday health and well-being. Later in health, fitness and well-being pupils will study how diet and nutrition also contribute to well-being.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils understand that regular exercise is required to build fitness
  • Pupils understand the different components of fitness and how they contribute to well-being and/ or sporting performance
  • Pupils have some appreciation of the mental and social benefits of playing sport, taking part in exercise classes or getting out in blue and green spaces

Health and well-being: reasons for participation

This unit will examine the benefits of participating in physical activity and sport on health, fitness and well-being to include physical, emotional/ mental and social factors. It will also explore the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle and implications of ill health.
